English is studied by all students in Indonesia from elementary school to university. However, not many students are able to use English actively when communicating. This poses a challenge for all English teachers, regardless of their teaching background. The communicative function of language is often overlooked when teachers deliver English lessons in the classroom. Many students in public schools are not accustomed to listening and using English to communicate, and learning lacks interaction between teachers and students, resulting in students' speaking skills remaining severely lacking. Because students are not accustomed to communicating in English and expressing ideas and opinions in English, their confidence in using English in active communication decreases.
In light of the above, English teachers should utilize English as a language for learning a variety of topics. They should not only study various types of texts and their information, linguistic elements, vocabulary, and so on, but also make English the language used in learning these many subjects. Make sure that students are exposed to using the language in every interaction in class or in the school environment so that with practice they become accustomed to and eventually master English.
Make your students confident in speaking English with a learning design that supports active interaction and an atmosphere that makes them comfortable even if the language they produce is not yet perfect.
